Comissions
“Cresco”, Dogs & Cats Walkway, Bayfront Park Miami, FL,USA

I have divided my work presented into series that I have worked through my practice. My interest are diverse as well as the mediums I use to channel my concerns ranging from identity, erasure, womanhood, time and space mixing traditional ways of painting with processes and diverse materials.

In my earlier work, I created in my art practice a personal language, through my own symbols, shapes and lines. For the reader, a suitable contrast might be what Rimbaud describes as giving colors to each vowel “A noir, E white, I rouge, U vert, O bleu: voyelles , Je dirai quelque jour vos naissances latentes ( A for black, E white, I red, U green, O blue: vowels, I shall tell, one day, of your mysterious origins).

My visual compositions carried traces of my culture and places where I had lived, but these were only fragments, not samples or accurate appropriations. My artwork was the result of simplifying the complexities of an identity by filtering the outside world through form and color. Departing from the abstraction of this visual language, I engaged with the body, rendering through forms and color, lines that revealed faces and bodies to depict the social fabric of the Dominican Republic, using friends, family and strangers. I used photography as a tool, sometimes setting the scene in the studio with the sitter or from pictures taken in markets.

I regard my practice as statements of my life, they carry traces of the places I have been and my surroundings. When I was pregnant my interests changed, the medium changed, as well as my perception of the world. As I felt my body evolving I wanted my work to become more visceral, more human, and the representation of the body became my main interest, not as the real image but as what it can be. I regarded the skin as a malleable boundary and from this point the body as a fluid. As a whole my work is guided by the possibilities of paint and painting itself, the desire to create narratives through form and color without neglecting my surroundings.

I view my art practice as an exploratory and introspective instrument, through a variety of modes that include drawing, painting, and installation. I create silhouettes from automatic drawings, using them as templates, which I then repeat in the canvas as if mirroring the soul, the body and the mind. I weave my personal concerns with a wider contemporary view of the body, stripping the traditional sexual use of depicting the female form to a gaze of introspection. I repurpose color theory to enhance movement within the form, nevertheless making the bodies intertwine. I apply references of modes of painting found in early abstraction, surrealism, orphism and futurism, with a great interest in expanding these aesthetics from a 2 dimensional plane to a 3 dimensional space, creating the work a tangible and more visceral experience, through the dynamic superposition and layering of materials and mediums.

I don’t want to confine myself into one path but rather experiment through material and processes ways I can translate my physiological and physical state referencing my multicultural background to raise question of identity, gender, womanhood and motherhood. I use autobiographical elements and art historical exercises as the backbone of the process of making work, even though the engagement whilst making the work becomes a being itself guided by the interactions of the materials employed.
